Will My Spider Veins Come Back After Treatment?

Written by Dr. Salvador A. Cuadra, MD, FACS | May 22, 2026 5:16:02 PM

It’s one of the most common questions patients ask right after (or right before) treatment:

“Are these spider veins gone for good… or am I going to be dealing with this again?”

The honest answer is reassuring but it also comes with an important caveat that many people aren’t told upfront.

The Good News First

When a spider vein is treated, whether with sclerotherapy or laser, it is effectively closed off and eliminated. Your body gradually absorbs it, and that specific vein does not return.

So if you’re looking at a treated area weeks or months later and noticing new lines or clusters, it’s not the same vein “coming back.”

It’s something new.

Why It Feels Like They Return

Spider veins have a way of showing up in familiar places. The thighs, calves, and ankles are common areas where pressure builds over time, so it’s not unusual for new veins to appear close to where old ones were treated.

From a patient’s perspective, it can feel like:

“I treated this already. Why is it back?”

But what’s really happening is more subtle.

Your veins are part of a larger circulatory system that continues to change with time, lifestyle, and even genetics. New veins can form as pressure shifts or small vessels weaken.

The Part Most People Miss

Here’s where spider veins are a little different from what people expect.

Treating them is often cosmetic and surface-level. It improves what you see but it doesn’t always address what may be happening deeper beneath the skin.

In some cases, spider veins are completely isolated and harmless.

In others, they can be connected to:

    • Early venous insufficiency
    • Increased pressure in deeper veins
    • Small feeder veins that aren’t visible

If those underlying issues aren’t identified, your body may continue to form new spider veins over time.

Does That Mean Treatment Isn’t Worth It?

Not at all.

Spider vein treatment is one of the most effective ways to improve the appearance of your legs and restore confidence. For many patients, the results are dramatic and long-lasting.

But it helps to think about it the right way:

It’s not always a one-and-done solution.

Instead, it’s often part of an ongoing approach to vein health, especially if you’re prone to developing them.

What a Better Approach Looks Like

At the Vein Institute of New Jersey, the goal isn’t just to treat what’s visible, it’s to understand why those veins are there in the first place.

That may include:

    • Evaluating circulation with ultrasound
    • Identifying any underlying vein dysfunction
    • Treating both the source and the surface veins when needed

When that deeper layer is addressed, patients often see:

    • Longer-lasting results
    • Fewer new veins forming
    • Better overall leg health

A More Realistic Expectation

Over time, your body will continue to change. Hormones, aging, daily habits, and genetics all play a role in how your veins behave.

So while treated spider veins are gone for good, your tendency to develop new ones may still be there.

For some patients, that means:

    • No further treatment needed for years
    • Occasional touch-ups down the line
    • Or simply monitoring changes as they happen

Spider Vein Treatments Work

And they work well.

But the idea that it permanently stops all future veins from forming isn’t quite accurate.

A better way to think about it is this:

Treatment clears what’s there today. A thoughtful, comprehensive approach helps protect against what may develop tomorrow.

If you’re considering treatment, the best first step isn’t just choosing a treatment, it’s getting a clear picture of your vein health overall.

When you understand what’s happening beneath the surface, your results above the surface tend to last longer and look better.
