Microphlebectomy, the medical term for the removal of large or medium-sized protruding varicose veins is a procedure that can work for you. But, it requires a trained physician to evaluate if this is the right treatment to undertake.
At the Vein Institute of New Jersey, we recognize that large varicose veins are not only unsightly and embarrassing, but they can be painful! Microphlebectomy is definitely an effective treatment for the removal of these larger varicose veins without the need for a major surgical procedure. It is reserved for those veins that are too large for sclerotherapy or laser treatment. The procedure involves the vein actually being removed from the leg through a small incision, which is less than 1/4".

Prior to performing the phlebectomy, it is important to make certain that the larger, deeper veins in the leg are functioning well. A Vein Institute of NJ physician will perform an ultrasound examination to ensure that the varicose veins are not due to the faulty valves in some of the deeper, larger veins. If there are problems with the deeper veins, those problems must be addressed first or the chances of the veins returning are significantly higher.
Microphlebectomy is performed on an outpatient basis in the office setting. A local anesthetic is used to numb the leg and create a relatively pain-free experience within one of our 7 vein treatment centers. A board-certified vascular surgeon will carefully remove the vein from the leg through the small incisions. There is minimal bruising, some black and blue marks will develop that are sure to disappear in a short time. In fact, you may return to most normal activity upon leaving the office.
Microphlebectomy is a permanent fix for the varicose vein. The vein cannot come back. Other veins may develop and even appear in the same location but those that have been removed are gone for good.
If new veins should develop, they can generally be eliminated with sclerotherapy injections.
Our patients are amazed at how easy the microphlebectomy procedure is and how quickly they can see positive results. The procedure itself takes less than thirty minutes to perform and requires no procedure prepping and minimal post-procedure restrictions. Patients often comment on how sorry they are that they waited so long to get rid of their ugly and painful varicose veins.
