At the Vein Institute of New Jersey we receive many questions about vein removal treatments for spider veins and varicose veins. But, we also hear a lot of common myths and misunderstandings about vein treatments from patients who are simply misinformed about these procedures. So, let’s set the record straight about three of the most common varicose vein treatment myths.
Vein Treatment Myth #1:
Men don’t get varicose veins, so only women need varicose vein treatments.
The truth is, while women are more likely to develop varicose veins, it’s estimated anywhere from 25 to more than 40 percent of men will also have some type of varicose vein by age 60. Many people also believe only women get spider veins. But, men can also develop spider veins, and can benefit from ameliorative therapies just as women do. Men have the benefit of having the veins covered by hair and therefore not being quite as noticeable.
Vein Treatment Myth #2:
Closing off a large vein, as is done when treating a varicose vein in the legs, will create circulatory problems.
This is false. Those ugly large varicose veins do not carry a significant amount of blood. Additionally, the blood that they were carrying back to the heart is simply re-routed through the remaining healthy veins.
Vein Treatment Myth #3:
Varicose vein issues only occur in older people.
Many people mistakenly assume treatments for varicose veins, spider veins, reticular veins and related conditions are only for older people, believing that younger people don’t develop these conditions. In reality, heredity plays a large role in the development of vein conditions and many people—especially women—develop these veins early in life. Varicose veins may develop in some people as early as the teenage years. Factors including pregnancy, occupations that require long periods of standing, and unhealthy weight gain also can also contribute to the development varicose veins.
